Hundreds of ladies will take part in Women on Wheels Bury St Edmunds ladies charity cycle ride, sponsored by Revel Outdoors, on Sunday (July 5) in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care.
This is the second Women on Wheels Bury St Edmunds. The inaugural event took place last year, inspired by the Women's Tour and raised over £3,000 for the hospice. It has since inspired other Women on Wheels events to be set up across Suffolk.
More than 180 participants will take part in a route of 5, 20 or 50 miles through countryside cycle paths around Bury St Edmunds starting from Nowton Park.
The ride is organised by Abbeycroft Leisure in partnership with Cycle Suffolk, Mildenhall Cycling Club, the West Suffolk Wheelers and Triathlon Club, Suffolk Sport, and St Nicholas Hospice Care and aims to encourage more women and girls to get on their bikes to keep active.
Alison Blackwell, Development Director at Abbeycroft Leisure, said: "We have been astounded by the number of ladies entering this year and by the way the event has inspired ladies in Bury St Edmunds to go riding together informally both to train for this event and to keep active. One such example of this is the Bury Bicycle Collective, a facebook group set up by two of our WoW riders Ann Williamson and Amelia Richardson which is growing week on week."
The ladies will depart in stages from 8.30am and for spectators there will be a number of activities at the park to take part in including a climbing wall, archery, bouncy castle, Moreton Hall WI cake stand, catering from Benson Blakes, and ride sponsor Revel Outdoors will be carrying out bike checks and will have a range of cycling accessories on offer.
Jordan Hughes, Community Fundraiser at St Nicholas Hospice Care, said: "A big thank you to all that have signed up. 185 ladies are doing something brilliant for St Nicholas Hospice Care allowing us to continue to make living with dying better for so many!"
