ACL is committed to minimising the harmful impacts where ever practicable and will seek to change the way we work where possible to exceed the environmental standards set down by law.
Energy management:
Our objective will be to minimise energy use and its associated CO2 emissions.
We will achieve this by;
- Continuous monitoring of energy use
- Regular servicing of all plant and mechanical services to ensure efficient operation
- The use of daylight meters for external lighting in our car parks and on our buildings
- The use of lighting controls in our buildings to minimise waste in areas not in regular use
- Where possible top up and heat our pool water to operational temperatures overnight
- Maintaining our pool water to agreed operating temperatures
- Displaying energy certificates (DECs) and advisory reports at all of our facilities.
Waste management:
Our objective will be to minimise the generation of waste.
We will achieve this by;
- Recycling non returnable glass, metal, paper and plastic
- Recycling organic matter
- Disposing of all obsolete and hazardous waste in accordance with environmental legislation
- Minimise the disposal of waste water at our swimming pools through effective management of our back washing procedures
- The use of water economisers on all our toilets and showers
- The use of Wee Agreements to dispose of lighting tubes.
Litter management:
Our objective will be to provide a safe clean environment for the local community and our customers.
We will achieve this by;
- Providing litter bins inside and outside of our centres
- Regular litter picking by centre staff inside and within the grounds of each of our centres
- Providing recycling points for drinks cans
Use of chemicals:
Our objective will be to minimise the impact on the environment of all chemicals used in our centres.
We will achieve this by;
- Where practicable using biodegradable materials
- Using chemicals in accordance with manufacturers guidance
- Disposing of all chemicals in accordance with environmental legislation
Staff awareness:
Our objective will be to make staff more aware of environmental issues and to recognise the important role they can play.
We will achieve this by;
- The inclusion of environmental awareness training as part of the staff induction
- Promotion of a ‘turn it off’ campaign at our centres
- Identifying and setting targets for the reduction of energy use and disposal of recyclable materials
Purchasing policy:
Our objective will be to ensure that we implement a sustainable procurement policy for goods and services.
We will achieve this by;
- Where possible using local suppliers
- Promoting good environmental policy and practice with our contractors and suppliers
